Sclerotherapy: Treating Deep Refluxing Veins

If you’ve been suffering from varicose veins, it is recommended to consider sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a procedure that involves injecting chemicals, known as sclerosing agents, into damaged veins. In addition to diminishing the appearance of varicose veins, it is also intended to help reduce the pain or side effects caused by this condition. Some of the side effects that come with a case of varicose veins are itching, pain, cramping, and discoloration. There is no specific cause as to how varicose veins are formed, but doctors have found a possibility that they may be tied to weak or damaged valves. Anyone is susceptible to forming varicose veins. Let’s go further into detail about the process of sclerotherapy and what it can do for you.

Areas Treated by Sclerotherapy

Varicose veins are most often found on the legs, but they can expand in other areas of the body. Varicose veins that are present on the thighs, calves, ankles, feet, and the face (usually the sides of the nose) can be treated with the help of sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy can treat veins no matter how deep they are under the skin. Although you may not see any varicose veins, they may be present if you are experiencing discomfort or your legs become swollen. Even more rarely, sclerotherapy may even be used to treat hemorrhoids. The method of treatment is usually used when hemorrhoids are smaller and external. Sclerotherapy can also be used when the hemorrhoids are bleeding or when surgical procedures are too risky to be done due to health concerns.

How Sclerotherapy Works

The process of sclerotherapy is rather simple. Before the treatment is initiated, a doctor may possibly use an ultrasound. This is used for varicose veins that lie deep in the tissue of your legs. Sclerotherapy treatment for venous problems can take anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour, depending on the severity of the conditions and where your health stands.

The procedure begins with the cleaning of the skin that circumvents the targeted veins. With a fine needle,  a sclerosing agent is injected into the damaged vein. Sclerosing agents typically include substances such as polidocanol, sodium tetradecyl sulfate, and hypertonic saline solutions. These liquid or foam solutions work to shut the walls of the vein and seal them shut. This intended to help redirect blood to unaffected veins. With time, your body absorbs the damaged vein, becoming less visible and uncomfortable. Based on the size or amount of varicose veins, you may need up to six to ten months’ worth of treatment, coming in once per month.

Preparing for Sclerotherapy

First and foremost, a consultation will be scheduled with your healthcare provider. They will help you determine if this procedure is right for you. A few days before the procedure, we will recommend that you avoid consuming certain medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin. This will help reduce the risk of bruising. You will also need to wear compression socks. It is likely that you will be required to wear one for several days after sclerotherapy treatment. You should inform your healthcare provider of any medical problems or medical history you may have.

If you’re wondering if you should prepare yourself for any pain that might accompany the procedure, there is no need to worry. Some people experience localized cramping or burning sensation, but it only lasts for a couple of seconds. Most people would say the sclerotherapy procedure is not painful at all.

What to Expect After the Procedure

There is little to no downtime after having sclerotherapy done. You’ll most likely be able to return to your everyday activities almost immediately, including work and school, soon after the procedure is done.

You will be advised to wear compression socks, only to be removed during showers. They should be worn throughout the entire day. If you begin to experience any pain, you can use ibuprofen. We advise you to stay active after sclerotherapy to help reduce the chances of future blood clotting. Although, physical activity may be limited shortly after the procedure to allow for the injections to kick in.
