Is Vein Treatment Painful and How is Discomfort Managed?

If you or a loved one suffers from varicose or spider veins, then you likely have looked into treatment. However, treating veins can sound intimidating to someone who’s never undergone the procedure before. In this article, we will discuss the potential pain levels of vein treatment and how we can help you manage them.

At El Paso Varicose Vein Clinic, we specialize in vein treatment in El Paso for varicose and spider veins. We welcome walk-ins and can reassure you that you’ll leave feeling better than when you came in. To learn more about our treatment options, call us at (915) 577-0121.

What to Expect

Many vein clinics offer walk-in services, which means there is no need for sedation. However, some patients have reported mild discomfort during treatment, followed by soreness or bruising in the few days following. Due to the simplicity and efficiency of our procedures, recovery is fast, and any pain is very mild.

Vein treatment can feel different depending on the procedure you go through. However, patients have described the overall feeling as:

  • A brief sting
  • Tenderness or tightness afterwards
  • Pressure during the treatment

Listed below are a few treatment options and what you can expect to feel while undergoing them.

Sclerotherapy

This treatment involves injecting a liquid into the problem vein to make it shrink. During the procedure, you’re likely to feel a mild burning sensation, brief itching or tenderness, with little to no downtime. Depending on how many veins require the treatment, multiple sessions may be necessary.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Using local anesthesia, the problem veins are removed using tiny punctures. Despite the small incisions, there will be no scarring post-procedure. You may experience some mild bruising and discomfort that will settle in a few days. The entire procedure will take roughly 20-40 minutes, depending on how much needs to be done. It’s important to note that you will be encouraged to engage in some form of walking for no more than an hour for a few days following.

Endovenous Laser Ablation

This procedure aims to help the larger varicose veins and treat the underlying cause of their growth. If the procedure can be conducted in under 45 minutes, no surgery or hospitalization is needed. There is minimal pain during the procedure, and anesthesia is usually used. You can expect to walk right out once it’s concluded, and some bruising over the next few days. You will also be encouraged to wear a compression tube for roughly a week.

For any of these procedures, the patients are welcome to use pain relief medication to ensure comfort. However, strong pain medication is not often needed or recommended.
