What is Endovenous Laser Therapy?

Endovenous laser therapy is one of the main treatments you can receive to treat varicose and spider veins and can be used for both cosmetic issues and to treat painful symptoms caused by varicose veins. During the procedure, our varicose vein doctor in El Paso will insert a small laser fiber into the veins that need to be treated. They typically start around the ankle and make their way around your leg to the places they bulge the most. The doctor uses an ultrasound to guide the fiber through your leg, typically taking it from the ankle to your upper leg.

The fiber releases a laser light into the vein that causes it to seal and collapse, essentially disappearing forever. Once the vein disappears, other healthy veins will contribute to regulating the blood flow in your leg. This technique treats the underlying causes of varicose veins and is 97 percent successful.

Most patients only need one treatment per leg by a varicose vein doctor on our staff. During the procedure, your leg should be both clean and shaven and a topical anesthetic will be applied to help with the pain. You may feel a small prick as the incision is made and some pressure as the fiber is inserted, but you shouldn’t feel much of anything otherwise.

Before the procedure, you may eat and drink as you please, and you don’t have to worry about taking any medications beforehand. If you’d like, you can take something to help with anxiety. After the procedure, feel free to take over-the-counter pain medications to help with healing.

Some advantages include:

  • A short procedure, with an average procedure lasting between 30 and 45 minutes
  • No need for general anesthesia is required
  • You aren’t required to go to the hospital
  • You should feel almost immediate relief from your symptoms
